Laima Guscia
I was born and educated in Adelaide. Work took me to Alice Springs for 10 years, where, after attending a workshop in basic basketry techniques my passion for weaving with natural fibres began.
I can still recall the excitement and captivation of creating my first basket from rushes and leaves collected from the Todd river.
From then on it has been an ongoing delight and commitment, with an abiding interest in world weaving traditions.
Opportunities to attend workshops by national and international sculptural artists (Nalda Searles, Jacki Abrams, Lucy Irvine, Christine Atkins, Bryant Holsenbeck) inspire me in new directions, transitioning from functional works to contemporary sculptural forms, predominantly using natural fibres.
The characteristics and potential of the materials allow for a freedom in form and texture.
Weaving with natural fibres sits well with the principles of sustainability, maintaining a light carbon footprint.
The re-use of materials that would otherwise be destined for the compost invites reappreciation of the forgotten beauty in the humble materials. Inspiration comes from everywhere.
